Difference Between A335 And A179 Steel Pipe

Dec 09, 2024 Inspection-Report-Of-ASTM-A179-1.pdf

Main difference between steel pipe A335 and A179 is their chemical composition, mechanical properties and application scenarios.

  • Chemical composition

A335: A335 steel pipe is a kind of alloy steel pipe, according to different standards, A335 can contain a variety of different alloying elements, such as chromium, molybdenum, vanadium and so on, the existence of these alloying elements makes A335 steel pipe has better corrosion resistance and high temperature performance. For example, A335 P91 alloy pipe contains 10Cr9Mo1VNb alloy element, which has good oxidation resistance and resistance to high temperature steam corrosion.

A179: A179 steel pipe usually refers to low carbon steel or ordinary carbon steel, its chemical composition of carbon, manganese, silicon and other elements in the content is different from A335, usually does not contain those alloying elements in A335.

  • Mechanical properties

A335: Due to the presence of alloying elements, the mechanical properties of A335 steel pipe are usually higher, including higher yield and tensile strengths, as well as better toughness and plasticity. For example, A335 P91 alloy pipe has a tensile strength of ≥585 MPa and a yield strength of ≥415 MPa.

A179: In contrast, A179 steel pipe may have lower mechanical properties and is more suitable for general low pressure and low temperature environments.

  • Application Scenarios

A335: Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature performance, A335 steel pipe is commonly used in high-pressure, high-temperature and corrosive environments, such as chemical pipelines and oil cracking equipment.

A179: It is more commonly used in general low-pressure and low-temperature fluid transport pipelines, such as heating systems, water supply and drainage systems.
