API 5L Grade B pipes are made from carbon steel. Specifically, they are manufactured from a carbon steel alloy that contains elements such as carbon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. The exact chemical composition and mechanical properties of API 5L Grade B steel pipes are specified in the API 5L standard, which is maintained by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

API 5L Grade B is one of the commonly used grades within the API 5L specification for line pipes used in the transportation of oil and natural gas. It offers a good balance of strength and ductility, making it suitable for a wide range of applications in the petroleum and natural gas industries. The "B" in API 5L Grade B indicates the level of minimum yield strength, which is 42,000 psi (290 MPa) or higher for this grade.

The two different construction types, according to the American Petroleum Institute specification include both API 5L Grade b Seamless and ERW Pipes. Although ERW pipes broadly fall under the welded pipe category. The Api 5l Grade B Erw Pipe is known to have a high dimensional accuracy along with a smooth appearance in addition to having a lower price. Double Submerged Arc Welded or API 5L Grade B Carbon Steel DSAW Pipes are available in either straight or spiral welded formats, with both inside and outside welds being performed on the pipes.

The welding performed on the API 5L Grade B Carbon Steel LSAW Pipes is longitudinal, which means that the hot rolled carbon steel coil plate is rolled into a pipe, following which the seam is to be welded longitudinally. On the other hand, seamless category Api 5l Grade B Pipe could be produced by either cold drawing or hot finishing. Seamless constructed carbon steel API 5L Grade b PSL1 and PSL2 Material pipes have a better surface finish along with closer tolerances, and smaller diameter or lighter walls. Apart from being used in the natural gas and petrochemical industry, the API 5L Grade B PSL1 Sour Service Line Pipes are used in piping systems involved in sour well applications.
