What is the difference between AISI 316 and AISI 316L?
AISI 316: AISI 316 is the standard grade of stainless steel with a higher carbon content than AISI 316L. It typically contains up to 0.08% carbon.
AISI 316L: AISI 316L, on the other hand, is a lower carbon variant of AISI 316. The "L" in 316L stands for "low carbon" and contains up to 0.03% carbon.
Both AISI 316 and AISI 316L have excellent corrosion resistance and are suitable for a wide range of applications. They contain high levels of chromium and nickel, which contribute to their corrosion resistance.
AISI 316L has a lower carbon content and is more resistant to sensitization, which can occur in standard AISI 316 when exposed to high temperatures (e.g. during welding). Sensitization leads to a reduction in corrosion resistance, and AISI 316L minimizes this problem, making it suitable for applications where welding or exposure to high temperatures is frequent.
