Advantages of Argon Arc Welding for Root Passes (Priming)

Why Argon Arc Welding Is Widely Used
Argon arc welding can be widely used mainly because of the following advantages:
1. Argon reduces the burning-off of alloying elements, producing dense, high-quality welded joints; the protection isolates the arc and molten pool from the unfavorable effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in the air.
2. The arc heat of argon arc welding is concentrated, combustion is stable, the arc column temperature is high, the heat-affected zone is narrow, welding productivity is high, and the tendency for stress, deformation, and cracking of the weldment is low.
3. Argon arc welding is a bright-arc process, easy to observe and operate.
4. The arc length is easy to maintain, electrode loss is small, and there is no flux or coating during welding, making mechanization and automation easy.
5. Argon arc welding can weld almost most metals, including easily oxidized and refractory metals such as titanium, molybdenum, magnesium, zirconium, aluminum, and their alloys.
6. It can perform all-position welding and is not limited by the position of the weldment.
Advantages of Argon Arc Welding for Root Passes
Argon arc welding priming (root pass) can obtain high-quality welded joints; by radiographic detection, the grade of the weld is above the second level.
(1) Good quality: As long as the right welding process parameters, good gas protection, and suitable welding wire are chosen, the root can obtain good penetration, uniform penetration, and a smooth and neat surface, without defects such as lack of penetration or root depression.
(2) High efficiency: The first layer of pipe welding using manual argon arc welding is continuous arc welding, while covered electrode arc welding is broken arc welding, so the efficiency can be increased by 2 to 4 times. Because there is no need to clean slag and repair the weld, the speed increases even further. For the second layer of electrode arc welding cover, a smooth and neat argon arc welding root is very favorable to the cover pass and ensures good fusion between layers, especially in small-diameter pipe welding, where the efficiency advantage is more significant.
(3) Easy to master: Manual covered electrode root welding is difficult to master and must be completed by experienced welders with a higher technical level. With manual argon arc welding for the root, general welders can basically master it after a short period of practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is argon arc welding priming? A: Using GTAW to weld the root pass of a pipe joint before the fill and cover passes.
Q: Why use argon for root passes? A: Argon protects the molten pool from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, preventing defects and preserving alloying elements.
Q: How much faster is GTAW root welding? A: About 2 to 4 times faster than covered electrode root welding, because the arc is continuous and no slag cleaning is needed.
Q: What metals can be argon arc welded? A: Almost all metals, including easily oxidized and refractory metals such as titanium, molybdenum, zirconium, and aluminum alloys.
Q: Is argon arc welding suitable for all positions? A: Yes, it can be used for all-position welding.
Q: What is the typical weld quality grade? A: By radiography, the weld grade is above the second level when parameters and protection are correct.
