API Casing and Tubing Size Chart

Jun 02, 2026

According to the API Spec 5CT (Specification for Casing and Tubing), API Casing and Tubing are collectively referred to as Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) and serve as critical components for ensuring wellbore structural integrity and providing fluid production conduits; casing is primarily used to line the wellbore, isolate formations with varying pressures, and prevent borehole collapse, while tubing is installed within the casing to transport oil and gas to the surface or facilitate injection and production operations.

Their standard outside diameter (OD) ranges are extensive, with tubing typically covering 1.050 inches (26.7 mm) to 4-1/2 inches (114.3 mm) and casing ranging from 4-1/2 inches (114.3 mm) up to 20 inches (508 mm), utilized in conjunction with various steel grades and thread connections based on well depth and geological conditions.

Length Range Table

API 5CT classifies pipe lengths into three "Ranges" to match rig derrick heights.

Range Class Tubing Length (ft / m) Casing Length (ft / m) Industry Convention
Range 1 (R1) 20.0 - 24.0 (6.10 - 7.32) 16.0 - 25.0 (4.88 - 7.62) Rarely used
Range 2 (R2) 28.0 - 32.0 (8.53 - 9.75) 25.0 - 34.0 (7.62 - 10.36) Most common standard
Range 3 (R3) 38.0 - 45.0 (11.58 - 13.72) 34.0 or more (10.36+) For deep or ERD wells

OCTG Casing and Tubing Steel Grades & Mechanical Properties

Steel grades determine the tensile strength, collapse resistance, and suitability for corrosive environments.

Group Common Grades Min. Yield Strength (psi) Service Environment
Group 1 H40, J55, K55, N80 40k - 80k General/Shallow wells, non-corrosive
Group 2 L80, C90, T95, C110 80k - 110k Sour Service (H2S) / Controlled Yield
Group 3 P110 110k Deep, high-pressure wells
Group 4 Q125 125k Extreme depth and pressure

Caing and tubing Connection & Thread Types

This defines how the pipes are joined and their sealing capabilities.

Pipe Type Abbreviation Full Description Key Features
Tubing NUE Non-Upset 10 Round threads (Obsolete/Rare)
EUE External Upset Forged upset ends (Standard/Strongest)
IJ Integral Joint Flush connection for tight clearances
Casing STC Short Round Thread Short thread, 8-round (Low pressure)
LTC Long Round Thread Long thread, 8-round (Better tension)
BTC Buttress Thread Trapezoidal thread (Industry standard)
General Premium Gas-tight Connections Non-API threads for gas-tight sealing

API Casing and tubing Inspection & Testing (NDT):

Hydrostatic Test: Required for every joint to verify pressure integrity.

Drift Test: Ensures a standard-sized mandrel can pass through the pipe.

Non-Destructive Examination: Ultrasonic (UT), Magnetic Particle (MPI), or Eddy Current testing.

FAQ

What is the API standard for casing?

The primary API standard for casing is API Spec 5CT (Specification for Casing and Tubing).

It is the industry-wide governing document that defines the technical requirements for dimensions, mechanical properties, steel grades, and testing methods for both casing and tubing used in oil and gas wells.

What is the API tolerance for casing?

According to API Spec 5CT, the standard manufacturing tolerances for casing are:

Outside Diameter (OD): +1.00% / -0.50% of the pipe's nominal OD.

Wall Thickness: The minimum wall thickness must not be more than 12.5% below the nominal wall thickness (there is no specified upper limit for wall thickness, provided weight requirements are met).

Weight: +6.5% / -3.5% per individual joint.

Straightness: Generally, the total deviation should not exceed 0.2% of the total pipe length.

What are the three common tubing sizes used?

The three most common API tubing sizes used in the oil and gas industry are: 2-3/8 inch (60.3 mm), 2-7/8 inch (73.0 mm), 3-1/2 inch (88.9 mm).
