ASTM A335 P9 Chrome Moly Pipe
Dec 03, 2025
Seamless Ferritic Alloy-Steel P9 Pipe description
P9 is a ferritic chromium-molybdenum alloy steel containing specific alloying elements that impart excellent high-temperature performance and stability, commonly used in high-temperature and high-pressure environments.
The primary alloying elements of A335 P9 alloy steel pipes include chromium (typically 8% to 10%) and molybdenum (approximately 0.9% to 1.1%). It also contains small amounts of carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur. This combination provides the material with good high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. In high-temperature environments, A335 P9 alloy steel pipes maintain high strength, resisting deformation or failure. The microstructure is primarily ferritic, ensuring stability even under prolonged high-temperature service.

A335 P9 Alloy Seamless Pipe Production Process
Hot-Rolled (Extruded) Seamless Pipe
Billet Heating: Round billet is heated to forging temperature (~1200°C).
Piercing: A mandrel is used to create a hollow shell.
Rolling/Extrusion: The shell undergoes three-roll cross-rolling, continuous rolling, or extrusion to form a seamless pipe.
Sizing/Reducing: The pipe is calibrated to final dimensions.
Cooling & Straightening: Air or water cooling followed by straightening.
Testing: Hydrostatic pressure or non-destructive testing (NDT) for defects.
Marking & Storage: Final inspection, marking, and storage.
Cold-Drawn (Cold-Rolled) Seamless Pipe
Billet Heating & Piercing: Similar to hot-rolled process.
Heading & Annealing: The billet is headed and annealed for ductility.
Pickling & Coating: Acid cleaning and copper plating for lubrication.
Cold Drawing/Rolling: Multiple passes to achieve precise dimensions.
Heat Treatment: Normalizing or tempering to refine microstructure.
Straightening & Testing: Final straightening and NDT.
Marking & Storage: Compliance marking and storage.
