Casing Pipe

Casing pipe is a heavy-duty pipe used to line the wellbore. It is a permanent structural component that remains in the well for its entire lifespan.

Primary Functions:

Wellbore Stabilization: It supports the well walls to prevent them from collapsing (borehole integrity).

Environmental Protection: It seals off formations to prevent oil or drilling fluids from leaking into underground freshwater aquifers (pollution prevention).

Pressure Control: It isolates different pressure zones to prevent blowouts or fluid migration between layers.

Physical Characteristics: It has a larger diameter but relatively thinner walls compared to drill pipe. It is manufactured under the API 5CT standard.

Installation: Once lowered into the wellbore, it is permanently fixed in place by injecting cement into the space between the pipe and the rock wall.

 

Drill Pipe - The "Arm" of the Drilling Rig

Drill pipe is the power transmission device that connects the surface drilling machinery to the drill bit at the bottom. It is temporary and is removed and reused once the drilling is finished.

Primary Functions:

Power Transmission: It transmits torque from the surface equipment to the drill bit, causing it to rotate.

Mud Circulation: Drilling mud is pumped down through the center of the drill pipe to cool the bit, lubricate the hole, and carry rock cuttings back to the surface.

Tension Support: It must support its own immense weight and the weight of the drill string while resisting extreme twisting forces.

Physical Characteristics: It has a smaller diameter but very thick and tough walls. It features heavy-duty "tool joints" (threaded ends) and is manufactured under the API 5DP standard.

Installation: It is connected segment-by-segment to form a "drill string." After the target depth is reached, it is disassembled and pulled out of the well.

Casing Pipe: It is permanent. Once it is lowered into the well, it is cemented into place and stays there for the entire life of the well.

 

Mechanical Strength

Drill Pipe: Designed to handle Torsion (twisting) and Tension (pulling). It must be extremely tough and flexible to withstand being spun thousands of times while deep underground.

Casing Pipe: Designed to handle Collapse Pressure (squeezing) and Internal Pressure (bursting). It must be strong enough to withstand the weight of the surrounding rock and earth trying to crush it.

 

Appearance and Connections

Drill Pipe: Usually smaller in diameter with very thick walls. It features heavy-duty, threaded "tool joints" that are welded to the ends of the pipe to handle constant assembly and disassembly.

Casing Pipe: Larger in diameter with relatively thinner walls compared to drill pipe. It uses simpler threaded couplings (like BTC, LTC, or STC) because it only needs to be connected once.

What is the casing made of?

Casing is primarily made of carbon steel for deep oil and gas wells due to its extreme strength. For shallow water wells, PVC is the most common choice because it is affordable and rust-proof. In corrosive or salty environments, stainless steel or specialized alloys are used for maximum durability.

 

How thick should casing be?

The thickness (wall thickness) of casing depends on the well depth, pipe diameter, and material.

Residential Water Wells (PVC):

Usually 0.2 to 0.4 inches (approx. 5mm to 10mm). Most people use "Schedule 40" or the thicker "Schedule 80" PVC.

Oil & Gas / Deep Wells (Steel):

Usually 0.25 to 1.0 inch (approx. 6mm to 25mm). The deeper the well, the thicker the steel must be to prevent the earth's pressure from crushing the pipe.

General Rule:

Thicker for deeper wells (to handle higher pressure).

Thicker for larger diameters (to maintain structural shape).
