1, the width of the weld: the weld surface and the connection of the base material is called the weld toe, the distance between the two toes is called the width of the weld.
2, residual height: in the butt weld, beyond the toe line above the part of the weld metal height is called residual height. The residual height increases the cross-sectional area and strength of the weld, which can increase the sensitivity of X-ray radiography, but it is easy to cause stress concentration at the weld toe, so the residual height should not be lower than the base material, but also can not be too high. According to national standards, the residual height of manual electric arc welding is 0 mm to 3 mm, and the residual height of submerged arc welding is 0 mm to 4 mm.

3, the shape and size of the fillet weld according to the appearance of the shape of the fillet weld, fillet weld can be divided into two categories: raised fillet weld called convex fillet weld; weld concave weld foot seam called concave fillet weld. In other conditions, the concave fillet weld stress concentration is much smaller than the convex fillet weld.
(1) weld thickness calculation: draw the largest right angle isosceles triangle on the cross section of the fillet weld, and the length of the plumb line from the apex of the right angle to the hypotenuse. If the cross-section of the fillet weld is a standard isosceles right triangle, the calculated thickness of the weld is equal to the thickness of the weld, in convex or concave fillet weld, the calculated thickness of the weld is less than the thickness of the weld.

(2) Weld Convexity: the maximum distance between the weld toe line and the weld surface in the cross-section of a convex fillet weld.
(3) Weld concavity: the maximum distance between the weld toe line and the weld surface in the cross-section of a concave fillet weld.
(4) Weld foot: the minimum distance from the weld toe of one weldment to the surface of another weldment in the cross-section of a fillet weld.
(4) Weld forming factor: the smaller the weld forming factor, the narrower and deeper the weld, such welds are prone to porosity, slag and cracks. Therefore, the seam forming factor should maintain a certain value, such as submerged arc welding seam forming factor should be greater than 1.3.
