What is P9 equivalent material
Mar 25, 2025
1. Chinese national standard (GB) equivalent grades
The Chinese equivalent of A335 P9 is 10Cr9Mo1VNb (corresponding to T91/P91), a martensitic heat-resistant steel with a high chromium-molybdenum alloying composition and vanadium- and niobium-strengthening elements. It is a martensitic heat-resistant steel with high chromium-molybdenum alloy and vanadium and niobium strengthening elements.
2. International/industry standard equivalents
ISO 9329-1 standard: corresponds to X10CrMoVNb9-1 (European EN standard designation);
Japan JIS standard: corresponds to STBA26 (heat-resistant steel for boilers).
3. Core composition and performance benchmarking
Chemical composition:
| composition | A335 P9 | 10Cr9Mo1VNb(T91/P91) |
|---|---|---|
| Cr | 8.0%~9.5% | 8.0%~9.5% |
| Mo | 0.85%~1.05% | 0.85%~1.05% |
| V | 0.18%~0.25% | 0.18%~0.25% |
| Nb | 0.06%~0.10% | 0.06%~0.10% |
| The two compositions are highly consistent, both through the vanadium and niobium elements to enhance high-temperature creep strength |
Mechanical properties:
High-temperature strength: at 600°C, the permissible stress of 10Cr9Mo1VNb is about twice that of conventional low-alloy steels (e.g., 2.25Cr-1Mo), and is comparable to the performance of P9;
Oxidation resistance: both rely on 9% chromium content to form a dense oxide layer, resistant to high temperature oxidation and sulphur corrosion.
4. Application benchmarking
Both are used in super-supercritical / ultra-supercritical power station boiler superheater, reheater and main steam piping, applicable temperature range ≤ 650 ℃;
In the petrochemical field, they are used in high-temperature cracking furnace tubes and other parts that need to withstand high temperature and pressure for a long time.
5. Differences and considerations
Process differences: 10Cr9Mo1VNb (T91/P91) welding needs to be strictly controlled preheating and post-weld heat treatment (such as 760 ~ 780 ℃ tempering) to eliminate the risk of cold cracking, process requirements are slightly higher than ordinary alloy steel ;
Differences in standards: In some international standards, P9 may be classified as a broader 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb series, while T91/P91 is a specific subdivision grade.
Summarising
The global mainstream equivalent of A335 P9 is 10Cr9Mo1VNb (T91/P91), which is highly compatible in terms of composition, properties and application scenarios, and is suitable for use in critical pipework for high temperature and high pressure energy equipment.
