What is stainless steel butterfly valve

Aug 01, 2025

A stainless steel butterfly valve is an industrial valve with a stainless steel body and core components. It controls fluid flow or regulates flow by rotating the disc. Its main features and applications are as follows:

1. Core Structure and Material Characteristics

Valve Body Material

Commonly made of 304, 316L, or duplex stainless steel (such as 4A duplex steel), it is resistant to chloride ion corrosion and acid and alkaline media.

Applicable temperature range: -196°C to 425°C (hard seal type).

‌Sealed design

‌Sealing Type‌ ‌Material/Structure‌ ‌Applicable Scenarios‌
‌Soft Seal‌ PTFE or rubber valve seat Food, medicine and other clean fluids
H‌ard Seal Multi-layer metal valve seat (such as stainless steel + alloy) High temperature, corrosive media

Drive Type

Manual (worm gear handle), pneumatic, electric (0-90° rotary actuator);
Connection Type: Flange (D341W), wafer (D373W), or welded

2. Performance Advantages and Limitations

F‌eatures ‌Advantages‌ L‌imitation
‌Corrosion resistance‌ Resistant to chloride ions, weak acids and alkalis, suitable for seawater desalination and other scenarios Strong oxidizing acids (such as concentrated nitric acid) require special alloys
‌Sealing level‌ Hard seal can achieve bidirectional zero leakage (in compliance with ANSI standards) Soft seals are prone to aging at high temperatures(>150℃)
‌Flow Control‌ Linear adjustment characteristics, the butterfly plate opening is proportional to the flow rate The flow resistance of diameters below DN200 is relatively large
Maintenance costs‌ Hard seal life is more than 10 years, reducing replacement frequency Repair requires professional disassembly tools
