304 V.S. 304L
1. Carbon content:
ASTM A312 304: Grade 304 has a carbon content of about 0.08%, which is within the typical range for most stainless steels.
ASTM A312 304L: On the other hand, the 304L grade has a lower carbon content of about 0.03%. This reduction in carbon content helps reduce sensitization during welding and heat treatment.
2. Solderability and sensitization:
ASTM A312 304: While 304 is generally easy to weld, it can be susceptible to sensitization. Sensitization refers to the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries at high temperatures, which can reduce corrosion resistance in certain environments.
ASTM A312 304L: The low carbon content of 304L significantly reduces the tendency to sensitize. This makes 304L the first choice for applications involving welding or exposure to high temperatures, as it maintains its corrosion resistance in welded joints.
3. Corrosion resistance:
304 and 304L have excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of environments, including those containing acids, alkalis, and chlorides.
4. Application:
ASTM A312 304: Grade 304 is suitable for a wide range of applications including food processing, chemical processing, pharmaceutical and construction uses.
ASTM A312 304L: Due to its reduced susceptibility to sensitization, 304L is often used in applications involving welding or exposure to corrosive environments, such as in the petrochemical industry where welded joints are common.
