What is the temperature limit for ASTM A335 P11
Jul 02, 2025
1. Long-term safe service temperature
Design temperature upper limit : 540℃, at which creep resistance and structural stability can be guaranteed.
Continuous working warning line : Exceeding 540℃ will lead to accelerated pearlite spheroidization, significantly reducing material strength and service life.
2. Critical failure temperature
550℃ is the inflection point of material performance:
>550℃, thermal strength drops sharply, and oxide film stability collapses;
Long-term over-temperature operation will cause creep cracking risk, and the thinning rate of the pipe wall will increase by 3–5 times.

3. Short-term tolerance
Accident condition limit : Can withstand short-term high temperature shock of ≤650℃ (duration ≤30 minutes);
>650℃, irreversible grain boundary degradation will occur, and the pressure bearing capacity will be lost.
4. Mandatory constraints for selection
Over-temperature design is strictly prohibited: In scenarios such as petroleum hydrogenation reactors and power plant boilers, P11 must be disabled when the medium temperature is ≥540℃, and P12 or higher grade alloy tubes are preferred.

The temperature limit of P11 alloy tubes follows the principle of "540℃ for safety, 550℃ is the red line". Its high temperature performance strictly depends on the chromium-molybdenum synergistic antioxidant mechanism. Over-temperature will directly cause material degradation and failure.
